Item A deuterium-palladium electrode as a new sensor in non-aqueous solutions: Potentiometric titration of weak acids in acetonitrile and benzonitrile(2010) Pantic, Igor; Mihajlović R.; Mihajlović L.A deuterium-palladium electrode was employed as a new indicator electrode for the titration of weak acids in acetonitrile and benzonitrile. The investigated electrode showed a linear dynamic response for p-toluenesulfonic acid in the concentration range from 0.001 M to 0.1 M with a Nernstian slope of 48 mV in acetonitrile. Sodium methylate, potassium hydroxide and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide proved to be very suitable titrating agents for these titrations. The response time was less than 10-11 s and the lifetime of the electrode was limitless. Advantages of the electrode are: long-term stability, fast response, reproducibility, easy preparation and low cost. © 2010 Institute of Chemistry, Slovak Academy of Sciences.Item Evaluation of healing and antimicrobiological effects of herbal therapy on venous leg ulcer: Pilot study(2010) Binić I.; Jankovic A.; Jankovic, Dragan; Jankovic I.; Vručinić Z.Venous leg ulcers represent a significant public health problem that will increase as the population ages. Numerous herbs and their extracts are potentially conducive to wound healing, including the ability to serve as an antimicrobial, antifungal, astringent, etc. A total of 32 patients with venous leg ulcers were randomized into two groups: a group with herbal therapy treatment (PT) (17 patients) and a control group (C) (15 patients). The investigation focused on five controls of parameter changes important for ulcer healing and the control of microbiological flora. Within-treatment analysis of the PT group showed that, following herbal therapy treatment, there was a significant decrease in the scores of surface leg ulcer and venous leg ulcer after week 7 of treatment (p < 0.05). In group C following topical antibiotic treatment there was no significant decrease in the surface leg ulcer. Comparing the results of decreased venous leg ulcer surface of the) PT group with the C group showed a significant difference at p < 0.05 after week 7 of treatment. The number of different types of isolated bacterial species decreased significantly (p < 0.05) after the use of herbal preparations. The results of this pilot study demonstrate the healing and antimicrobiological effects of herbal therapy on non-infected venous leg ulcer. The method provides surgeons with a fast and reliable tool for tissue engineering and implantation and therefore improves the quality of life for patients. Digital images of healthy sternum samples were used to develop a reverse modeling algorithm that semi-automatically generates a necessary and sufficient simplification of the tissue geometry to be fabricated in an inexpensive and applicable manner. In this particular case, the redesign of the missing part of the sternum in CAD software took three designer-hours. At the same time, the suitable simplification of the geometry affects the fabrication of simpler and less expensive casting molds. Furthermore, the core of the developed algorithm for the reverse modeling of sternum can be applied in the reverse modeling improvement of other tile (or plate-like) bones. © 2010 Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine.Item MHD flow and heat transfer of two immiscible fluids between moving plates(2010) Stamenković, Živojin; Nikodijević, Dragiša; Blagojevic B.; Savic M.The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flow of two immiscible and electrically conducting fluids between isothermal, insulated moving plates in the presence of an applied electric and inclined magnetic field has been investigated in the paper. The partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer are solved analytically with appropriate boundary conditions for each fluid and these solutions have been matched at the interface. The numerical results for various values of the Hartmann number, the angle of magnetic field inclination, load parameter and the ratio of electrical and thermal conductivities have been presented graphically. It was found that decrease of magnetic field inclination angle flattens out the velocity and temperature profiles. With the increase of the Hartmann number velocity gradients near the plate's increases, temperature in the middle of the channel decreases and near the plate's increases. Induced magnetic field is evidently suppressed with an increase of the Hartman number. The effect of changes of the load factor is to aid or oppose the flow as compared to the short-circuited case.Item Classification of stacking interaction geometries of terpyridyl square-planar complexes in crystal structures(2010) Janjić, Goran; (Andrić) Živković, Jelena; Kapor A.; Bugarić I.; Zarić, SnežanaStacking interactions of terpyridyl square-planar complexes in crystal structures were studied analyzing data from the Cambridge Structural Database. In most of the crystal structures, two terpyridyl complexes were oriented head-to-tail or head-to-head, with head-to-tail orientation being most prevalent. The number of structures with other orientations was very small. Based on the analysis of interacting geometries, we classified overlaps of terpyridyl complexes into six types. The types were defined by values of several geometrical parameters and all interactions of the same type had very similar overlap patterns. © 2010 The Royal Society of Chemistry.Item Phase transformations of Fe73.5Cu1Nb 3Si15.5B7 amorphous alloy upon thermal treatment(2010) Minic D.; Gavrilovic-Wohlmuther, Aleksandra; Minic D.; Rafailović L.; Angerer P.; Wosik J.; Maričič A.The structural transformations of Fe73.5Cu1Nb 3Si15.5B7 amorphous alloy under non-isothermal as well as isothermal conditions were studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that slow heating rates induce a series of stepwise structural transformations consisting of endothermic peaks and more pronounced exothermic peaks in the broad temperature range from 350 to 970 K. Over this range the system changed from an as-deposited amorphous alloy of higher excess free energy to an annealed sample exhibiting lower excess of free energy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis found that primary crystallization started with formation of a face-centred Fe3Si phase in an amorphous matrix. At higher temperatures (between 780 and 920 K) we detected, in addition to the Fe 3Si phase, which reached an almost constant value of 85 wt%, three new phases, FeCu4, Fe16Nb6Si7 and Fe2B. Further annealing above 923 K led to, with Si initially migrating from the Fe-Si phase to the Nb-rich grain boundaries, formation of two new phases, Fe5Si3 and Nb5Si3. The Fe content in the cubic Fe-Si phase was estimated by means of a change in lattice parameter. Below 923 K the size of crystallites for the major Fe 3Si phase was less than 10 nm. It was shown that further heating induced rapid crystallite growth, reaching a size greater than 500 nm at 1123 K. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.Item A deuterium-palladium electrode as a new sensor in non-aqueous solutions: Potentiometric titration of weak acids in N,N-dimethylformamide and N-methylpyrrolidone(2010) Mihajlović L.; Mandić, Snežana; Pantic, Igor; Mihajlović R.A deuterium-palladium electrode was employed as a new indicator electrode for the titration of weak acids in N,N-dimethylformamide and methylpyrrolidone. The investigated electrode showed a linear dynamic response for p-toluenesulfonic acid in the concentration range from 0.1 to 0.001 M, with a nernstian slope of 78.0 mV in N,N-dimethylformamide and of 64 mV per decade in N-methylpyrrolidone. Sodium methylate, potassium hydroxide, and tetrabutylammonium hydroxide proved to be very suitable titrating agents for these titrations. The potential in the course of the titration and at the titration end point was rapidly established. The response time was less than 10-11 s, and the lifetime of the electrode is long. The experimental results obtained for the proposed electrochemical sensor and a conventional glass electrode were in good agreement. The advantages of the electrode are log-term stability, fast response, reproducibility, and easy preparation. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.Item Composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils of some medicinal and spice plants(2010) Cvijović M.; Dukić D.; Mandic L.; Acamovic-Djokovic G.; Pesakovic M.Item The Yang-Lee edge singularity for the Ising model on two Sierpinski fractal lattices(2010) Knezevic M.; Knežević D.We study the distribution of zeros of the partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model near the Yang-Lee edge on two Sierpiski-type lattices. We have shown that relevant correlation length displays a logarithmic divergence near the edge, ξ yl ∼ | ln(δ h) |Φ where Φ is a constant and δh distance from the edge, in the case of a modified Sierpinski gasket with a nonuniform coordination number. It is demonstrated that this critical behavior can be related to the critical behavior of a simple zero-field Gaussian model of the same structure. We have shown that there is no such connection between these two models on a second lattice that has a uniform coordination number. These findings suggest that fluctuations of the lattice coordination number of a nonhomogeneous selfsimilar structure exert the crucial influence on the critical behavior of both models. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.Item Improvement of algorithm for numerical crack modelling(2010) Jovicic G.; Zivkovic M.; Jovicic, Nemanja; Milovanovic, Dragan; sedmak, aleksandarFor numerical simulation of crack modelling in fracture mechanics the eXtended finite element method (Xfem) has been recently accepted as a new powerful and efficiency methodology. In the paper we present the details of implementation of the Xfem algorithm in our in-house finite elements based software. Also, in this study, we investigated the impact of the node enrichment variations on results of the developed numerical procedure. In this study, objective was to examine the properties of standard Xfem algorithm without using of Near Tip enriching functions in order to create possibilities for future application Xfem in the zone of plasticity. In order to evaluate the computational accuracy, numerical results for the Stress Intensity Factors are compared with both theoretical and conventional finite element data. Obtained numerical results have shown a good agreement with the benchmark solutions. For calculation of the Stress Intensity Factors (SIF), we used the J-Equivalent Domain Integral (J-EDI) Method. Computational geometry issues, associated with the representation of the crack and the enrichment of the finite element approximation, are discussed in detail.Item Synthesis of new antimicrobial 4-aminosubstituted 3-nitrocoumarins(2010) Dekić B.; Đekić, Vera; Radulovic, Niko; Vukicevic R.; Palić R.A series of new coumarin derivatives has been synthesized by condensation of 4-chloro-3-nitrocoumarin and the appropriate arylamine and sulfonamide in ethyl acetate in the presence of triethylamine. The synthesized compounds were screened for their in vitro antimicrobial activity against thirteen strains of bacteria and three fungal/yeast strains using disk diffusion assays. They were shown to possess a wide range of activities from almost completely inactive compounds to medium active ones. (4-[(5-Chloropyridin-2-yl)amino]-3-nitro-2H-chromen-2-one) showed similar activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae as tetracycline. © 2009 Institute of Chemistry, Slovak Academy of Sciences.Item Influence of rare-earth dopants on barium titanate ceramics microstructure and corresponding electrical properties(2010) Mitić V.; Nikolic, Zoran; Pavlović, Vladimir; Paunovic V.; Miljkovic M.; Jordović B.; Živkovic L.In this article, ytterbium and erbium oxides are used as doping materials for barium titanate (BaTiO3) materials. The amphoteric behavior of these rare-earth ions leads to the increase of dielectric permittivity and decrease of dielectric losses. BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.01-0.5 wt% of Yb2O3 and Er2O3 were prepared by conventional solid-state procedure and sintered at 1320°C for 4 h. In BaTiO3 doped with a low content of rare-earth ions (0.01 wt%) the grain size ranged between 10 and 25 μm. With the higher dopant concentration of 0.5 wt%, the abnormal grain growth is inhibited and the grain size ranged between 2 and 10 μm. The measurements of capacitance and dielectric losses as a function of frequency and temperature have been carried out in order to correlate the microstructure and dielectric properties of doped BaTiO 3 ceramics. The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant as a function of dopant amount has been investigated. © 2009 The American Ceramic Society.Item Economical aspects of the improvement of a mechanical vapour compression desalination plant by dropwise condensation(2010) Lukic, Nebojsa; Diezel L.; Fröba, Andreas Paul; Leipert A.By applying ion implantation on metallic surfaces for the adjustment of dropwise condensation (DWC), the condensation heat transfer coefficient can be significantly improved. Using this thermal desalination process, mechanical vapour compression (MVC) in particular can be more effective. In comparison with common condensation processes, where filmwise condensation (FWC) dominates, the main heat exchanger area and/ or the minimum temperature difference between the evaporation-condensation sides can be reduced. Within the present study, three scenarios regarding the economical effects of improving the condensation heat transfer process are discussed. Based on models of the heat transfer and product water costs, a reduction by as much as 35.4% could be demonstrated. © 2010 Elsevier B.V.Item Can you combine herbal therapy with physical agents in the treatment of venous leg ulcers?:(2010) Jankovic A.; Binić I.; Vručinić Z.; Jankovic, Dragan; Jankovic I.; Janić S.Introduction: Venous leg ulcers are an important and common health problem. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of herbal therapies alone or in combination with physical therapy in the treatment of venous ulcers, as well as their antibacterial effects. Patients and Methods: Our study included 60 patients (3 groups, 20 patients each) with non-infected venous leg ulcers. The patients were treated with herbal therapy alone (group HTC), with a combination of electro-ionizing radiation and herbal therapy (group ERHT) or with a combination of polarized light and herbal therapy (group PLHT). Results: Surface area and score of venous leg ulcers were followed clinically at baseline and at the end of 1, 3, 5, and 7 weeks of treatment. Comparing the results within the HTC, PLHT, and ERHT groups we found that the physical agents and herbal therapy significantly accelerated the healing of venous leg ulcers and reduced bacterial flora (p < 0.05). Comparing the results between the tested groups revealed no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Our results demonstrate healing and antibacterial effects of combined physical and herbal therapies, but no superiority of the combined treatment for venous leg ulcers as compared to treatment by herbal therapy alone. © 2010 S. As such, road profiles should be considered carefully. Macro profiles consider the spatial geometry of the road (curves, longitudinal and lateral slopes) while micro profiles consider roughness in longitudinal and lateral directions. These profiles have random characteristics that can be quantified under onroad and off-road conditions using a road profiler. This paper presents an analysis of a new concept for a universal profiler without gyroscopic stabilizers. © 2010 The Korean Society of Automotive Engineers and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.Item A model of gear transmission: Fractional order system dynamics(2010) Hedrih K.; Nikoli-Stanojevi V.A theoretical model of multistep gear transmission dynamics is presented. This model is based on the assumption that the connection between the teeth of the gears is with properties within the range from ideal clasic to viscoelastic so that a new model of connection between the teeth was expressed by means of derivative of fractional order. For this model a two-step gear transmision with three degrees of freedom of motion has been used. The obtained solutions are in the analytic form of the expansion according to time. As boundary cases this model gives results for the case of ideally elastic connection of the gear teeth and for the case of viscoelastic connection of the gear teeth, as well. Eigen fractional modes are obtained and a vizualization is done. © 2010 K. S. Hedrih and V. The methanol extract of the Cetraria pinastri showed a strong antioxidant activity, whereas the extracts of the species Fulgenesi fulgens, Cladonia fimbriata and Parmelia crinita showed the moderate one and the extract of the species Ochrolechia parella and Cladonia digitata the weak one. The methanol extract of the lichen Cetraria pinastri had the biggest total phenol content (32. 9 mg/g of the dry extract). A certain correlation was established between the antioxidant activity and the total phenol content for the researched lichen extracts. The work also explores the antimicrobial activity of the methanol extracts of the mentioned species of lichens against six bacterial and eleven fungi species by the disc-diffusion method and by establishing the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The methanol extracts of the lichens Cetraria pinastri and Parmelia crinita showed the strongest both antibacterial and antifungal activity against most of the tested microorganisms. These researches suggest that the lichens Cetraria prunastri can be used as new sources of the natural antioxidants and the substances with antimicrobial features. © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.Item UVC radiation-induced effect on human primary thyroid cell proliferation and HLA-DR expression(2010) Kostic I.; Toffoletto B.; Toller M.; Beltrami C.; Ambesi Impiombato F.; CURCIO, FrancescoThe aim of this study was to examine how UVC irradiation will affect normal human thyroid cell proliferation and HLA-DR expression. Primary human thyroid cells were exposed to UVC (254nm wavelength) irradiation. In some experiments 0.5mM buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) was added. Apoptosis was detected measuring annexin V, proteins involved in apoptotic process (p53, Bax, Bcl-2, caspase 3, and 9) by immunoblot analysis and HLA-DR expression by FACS. UVC induced a cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase in the first 24h, accumulation of cells in the S phase 72h after treatment, and an increase of apoptotic cells. BSO pretreatment showed an earlier appearance and a higher percentage of apoptosis. p53, caspase 3 and 9 were increased, while Bax and Bcl-2 were decreased. We also observed a transient significant increase in HLA-DR expression. UVC inhibited cell proliferation and induced apoptosis in normal human primary thyroid cells. An inhibitor of glutathione synthesis induced an earlier appearance and higher percentage of apoptosis suggesting that oxidative stress may play a role. Apoptotis involved components of the intrinsic mitochondrial pathway. A transient increase in HLA-DR expression after UVC irradiation could play a role in inducing AITD. © 2010 Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart · New York.Item A case study of industrial water polluted with chromium (VI) and its impact to river recipient in Western Serbia(2010) Cvijovic, Mirjana R.; Djurdjevic, Predrag; Cvetkovic O.; CRETESCU, IgorIn this work the method for the treatment of industrial waste waters effluents containing hexavalent chromium in three companies during process of treating metal surface with chromic acid is described.
